Architectural Design Programs

Design opportunities are plentiful in the area of architecture and building construction. In addition to the architects responsible for overall construction specifications, drafters and CAD operators perform much of the detailed design work of a building's systems.

Interior designers determine the appropriate use and finish of the building's inside spaces, and specialists in mechanical and industrial design come up with some of the great innovations and usability ideas we take for granted.

Here are some of the educational opportunities available in architectural design:

CAD and Drafting Degrees

Originally drawn by hand on the drafting table, blueprints are now usually created using computer aided design tools. That means that today's draftsperson or CADD operator not only needs to know about design, but also how to take advantage of the capabilities that the computer offers him or her. students seeking drafting degrees may choose a generalized track that exposes them to all types of skills, or may choose a specialized course in architectural, civil, or mechanical drafting.

Interior Design Degrees

If an architect determines a building's structure, it's the interior designer that takes that structure and makes it functional. Interior designers are responsible for everything from space planning to selecting furniture and wallpaper. In addition to having to know about construction techniques, interior designers need to have the creative vision to see how people will use the spaces they create.
